Garden Decor and Accents
Each of us has a perception of what we mean when we say Garden Decor. Some think of fountains and sculptures, others may think of benches or tables and chairs, and a different person may picture lights, birdbaths, or planter boxes. Your perception is the only relevant perception for you. Below are definitions that we used to create our perception.
Garden: a planned space, usually outdoors, set aside for the display, cultivation, or enjoyment of plants and other forms of nature. The garden can incorporate both natural and man-made materials.
Decor: the furnishing and decoration of a room.
Our definition of Garden Decor: "The artful decoration of a planned space that enhances the enjoyment of nature".
Wherever that space is, if it is well planned and decorated to create the feel you desire then it is the perfect room in nature for you. Using accents and ornaments in the garden you can stir the emotions, calm worries, brighten the mood, or remove stress from the hectic workday. When plants, a fountain, a couple of urns, a stone path, and wall decorations all work together it creates a sanctuary that allows you to escape the pressure or the world for a few minutes or hours.
You may have great intuition and can design your space with no assistance at all, others may not have the intuition, or time, and will choose to have a landscape designer create the space. Regardless, having a place that is just outside your back door is an amazing way to wind down a long day or enjoy a weekend afternoon. If you are a do-it-yourself garden designer there are a few guidelines you need to know that will help you create a more pleasing space. We spoke to the professional designers who buy from us and put their "must follow" rules in one place for you on our Garden Design Principles page. If you are using a landscape designer there are some examples in our Garden Decor Themes Page that can help you show them the outcome you desire.
As you plan, remember to consider the decor, accents and ornaments you will use to reinforce the feel, rhythm and flow of your space. Incorporating them into the planning stage will keep them from appearing to be afterthoughts and will keep your design from feeling jumbled and chaotic.
